File Management

Last updated: Apr 30, 2026•2 min read.

SketchUp for Web saves your models to Trimble Connect, Trimble's cloud-based common data environment and collaboration platform. Here’s all the information you need to use Trimble Connect to manage the files you create in SketchUp for Web:

  • Opening Files - You can open files from the SketchUp for Web Home page, Trimble Connect, or a file saved to your device.

  • Saving and Downloading Files - SketchUp for Web helps you save updates to your models through auto-saves to Trimble Connect. You can also retrieve backups from your browser’s cache and through SketchUp for Web’s full revision history.

  • Link Sharing - With Link Sharing, SketchUp makes it easy to show off your models without worrying about accidental edits, unexpected downloads, or your document ending up in the wrong hands.

Importing and Exporting Non-SketchUp Files

SketchUp for Web does not have unrestricted access to your device’s file system. The following special rules apply when you import and export 3D model files created in applications other than SketchUp:

When importing .dae and .3ds files:

  • Create a folder that includes all texture images.

  • Create a zipped archive containing that folder and the model.

  • The model file must include the proper paths to find the texture images before zipping the file.

  • Use the import options in SketchUp for Web to import the zipped files.

When exporting .dae, .3ds, .wrl, .fbx, .xsi, .obj:

  • SketchUp for Web will create a zipped archive file.

  • The file must be unzipped before exporting to another application, including a separate instance of SketchUp.
