Materials and Textures in the Revit Importer

Last updated: juin 19, 20262 min read.

The Revit Importer analyzes the appearance asset in every material in your Revit file, including the name, base color, and any associated texture image references. SketchUp then uses this data to generate a native SketchUp material that appears in the Materials panel. Along with materials, the importer assigns Tags to each Revit category with auto-assigned colors, helping you distinguish geometry by category.

Preserving Texture Scale

The Revit Importer automatically maintains a Revit material’s real-world texture scaling. Revit materials store texture dimensions as physical units. Imported materials and textures will tile without manual intervention. This helps to make sure elements like human figures or standard components appear with the correct proportions relative to the rest of the model.

The Revit Importer performs the following actions to maintain this accuracy:

  • Reads physical dimensions from the Revit appearance asset.

  • Sets texture sizes that match those physical dimensions.

  • Converts units to match your unit settings.

Managing Missing Textures

If your .rvt file references external image files that aren’t embedded in the file, textures may go missing during the import process. The Revit Importer searches for these external files in the same directory as the file you are attempting to import. If it can’t find them, the material will be imported without a texture.

The Import Results dialog you see when your import is complete will let you know if there are any missing textures. To resolve this issue:

  1. Identify the number of missing textures using the information in the Import Results dialog.

  2. Locate the source texture files on your device. Common locations include:

    • The default Autodesk library:
      %APPDATA%\Autodesk\Revit\Autodesk Revit <version>\Materials

    • Project-specific shared asset folders as defined by your BIM manager.

    • Specific paths found in Revit via Manage > Materials > Appearance tab.

  3. After locating the files, copy them to the same folder as the .rvt file you imported.

  4. Use the Revit Importer to import the file again.
