SketchUp’s Live Components are a type of configurable component you use in your SketchUp models. You can find Live Components in 3D Warehouse. In 3D Warehouse, you can search for, configure, preview in 3D, and download Live Components that best suit your projects. To get started, check out our Skill Builder video:

  2. Click Filters. Select the check box next to Live Components in the Speciality Filters section and click Apply. All published Live Components will appear in the Models tab.

  3. Use the search bar at the top of the page to further refine and narrow your search results

After locating a Live Component in 3D Warehouse, you can configure it to fit the needs of your project. Like other SketchUp components, any configuration changes apply at the definition level and apply to all instances of that component. For more information, see Components.

Configuring Live Components

Live Components can be configured to fit the needs of your project. You can configure a Live Component in 3D Warehouse before you download it or within SketchUp after you have added it to your model.

To configure a Live Component you’ve found in 3D Warehouse, follow these steps:

  1. On the Model Overview tab of a Live Component’s Details page, hover over the model’s image and click Configure Live Component or click Configure under the model description.

  2. If you need a bit more space, click Expand (SketchUp Creating LiveComponents4.png) to expand the window to full screen. You can also use the Pan, Zoom, and Orbit tools to navigate around the model.
  3. In the Configure panel, adjust the sliders, fields, and other options for the selected Live Component. These options will vary based on the nature of the component. As you adjust these settings, the model updates in real time.

  4. If you are satisfied with the component’s configuration, click Download under the model’s description to save the component as a .skp file.

Live Components in SketchUp

If you are accessing 3D Warehouse from within SketchUp, you can load a Live Component directly into your model. You can also import a Live Component you’ve previously downloaded. Once you’ve added a Live Component to your model, you can configure it by choosing Configure Live Component from the component’s context menu or double-clicking the component.

After you configure your Live Component, you can continue to make adjustments to your component in the following ways:

  • SketchUp assists you when placing a Live Component using AutoFit. For more information on how this works, see AutoFit Live Components.

  • Using SketchUp’s Scale tool (icon scale), you can change the size of a component. When you activate the tool, the scale grips you see aren’t always locked to the bounds of the selected Live Component. This allows for more flexibility when resizing the component.

  • If you would like to adjust the way your Live Component looks, you can apply custom materials using the Paint Bucket tool (icon paint bucket.png), including materials that aren’t already in the component.
