Multi-Factor Authentication

Multi-factor Authentication (MFA) adds additional layers of security used to verify your identity when logging into SketchUp. When you enable MFA, your Trimble ID uses two factors of authentication – your username and password, and a verification code based on the MFA method associated with your account.

Note: If your organization manages your login credentials you will need to contact your administrator to change your email address, password, MFA, or other settings.

When creating a Trimble ID, the option to protect your account with MFA appears the first time you successfully attempt to login.

You can also choose to enable MFA through your profile page.

You can also add another MFA method, disable MFA, or change your default MFA method using the options in your profile.

Setting Up Multi-Factor Authentication

After choosing to enable MFA, you can set it up to use a one-time password, a passkey, or a secondary email.

Tip: You can enable multiple authentication methods in case you lose access to your first MFA method. SketchUp strongly recommends setting up at least two methods. See Disabling, Adding, or Changing Multi-Factor Authentication below for more instructions.

One-Time Password

A Time-Based One-Time Password (TOTP) uses an authenticator application that generates a one-time authorization code. Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator are examples of authenticator applications you can use.

To get started, scan the QR code using your authenticator application. If you have problems scanning the QR code, click Can’t Scan It? for a code you can enter. A confirmation message will display verifying you have successfully enabled MFA.

Once enabled, you will enter the One-Time code displayed in your authenticator app each time you sign in.

Secondary Email

When choosing to use a secondary email as your MFA method, a code will be sent to that email address each time you login. To set up a secondary email:

  1. Enter the email you want to use and click Next.
  2. Check that email for a message with a verification code.
  3. Enter the code and click Submit.

Once enabled, a new One-Time code will be sent to your secondary email address each time you sign in.

Passkeys

This method uses biometrics like a fingerprint or facial recognition, a PIN, a drawn pattern, or a physical key like a mobile device or USB drive. Biometrics must already be set up on your device to use them as a passkey with Trimble ID. Mobile and USB passkeys can be set up when enabling passkeys with Trimble ID. Make sure you have your mobile device or USB drive on hand to complete the setup process.

Once enabled, you will need access to the device where your passkey is stored every time you sign in.

Warning: Some passkeys, like biometrics, are device specific and can’t be used on all devices. We recommend setting up a second MFA method on your profile page when using a passkey to make sure you can login on any device.

To set up a passkey:

  1. Select Create a Passkey.
  2. Choose from the available passkey options for your device:

Windows

MacOS

  1. Follow the prompts from your browser or device to create and save the passkey.
  2. Select Done.

Disabling, Adding, or Changing Multi-Factor Authentication

If you need to change your MFA for any reason, you can do so from your profile. To disable MFA, open your profile and follow these steps:

  1. Click the Multi-Factor Authentication toggle.
  2. When prompted, enter your password.
  3. Enter the verification code sent to your preferred MFA method.
  4. Confirm you would like to disable MFA.

To add another MFA option to your account, follow these steps:

  1. Under Multi-Factor Authentication click Set Up next to the option you want to add.
  2. Follow the prompts based on that authentication method.
  3. (Optional) When you sign in click the context menu () and choose Make Default to make the new MFA method your default method.

If you are having trouble with your chosen MFA method, or are unable to access your account to change or disable it, contact our support team for help.
