Crashes - Causes and Troubleshooting
When SketchUp crashes it's usually due to one of the following issues:
- An out-of-date graphics driver
- The operating system is using the wrong graphics card when running SketchUp
- Your graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements needed to run SketchUp
If you aren't sure what's causing a crash, here's some steps you can use to troubleshoot the problem:
- Try to reproduce the crash. Perform the same actions you did when SketchUp crashed the first time and see if it crashes again. If it does, take note of what happened.
- If you have access to an earlier version of SketchUp, try to reproduce the crash in that version.
- Close all other applications you may have open and try to reproduce the crash.
- Copy the geometry in your model, open a new model, and paste your geometry there.
- Purge unused geometry in your model using the following steps:
- Windows
- Model Info
- Statistics
- Purge Unused
- Close all panels and dialogs in the model causing the crash.
- Reinstall SketchUp. If you installed SketchUp in a custom location, try to install it in the suggested default location and try to reproduce the crash.
- If you have multiple user accounts on your device, try logging in as another user and attempting the same actions that caused the crash.
- Update the driver for your graphics card. If you aren't sure how to do that, take a look at How can I update my computer's graphics driver? for more information.
- Roll back your graphics driver to an earlier version.
- Disable Ruby Scripts
Bug Splat Error Reports
When SketchUp crashes you will see Bug Splat, a third party application integrated into SketchUp that helps us collect crash information.

With Bug Splat you can send us data about the crash you just experienced and save a copy of
that data for yourself. We encourage everyone to submit an error report when a crash happens. When filling out an error report we ask you to provide specific details about what happened when you experienced the crash. Here's an example:
SketchUp seems to crash afterI perform the following actions:
- Open SketchUp
- Draw a rectangle
- Select it
- Copy the rectangle
- Paste the rectangle
The crash happens after I paste the rectangle.
Providing a name and email address in your error report can help our support team find your error report when contacting them. We also encourage you to view and save your own copy by clicking View Report Details.
How We Use Error Reports
The data submitted through error reports helps SketchUp gather information on the crashes our users experience. The details in the error report, especially the code we receive, can help us make sure these crashes don't happen again in the future.
