Resolving issues related to June 1, 2015 changes that affect SketchUp Pro 2013 and SketchUp Pro 8

If you haven't done so already, please review the article titled Understanding the June 1, 2015 changes that affect SketchUp 2013 and SketchUp 8 for more context about this article.

If you're unable to use SketchUp Pro version 2014 or newer, this article has information that may help restore some of the functionality that broke when the redirect service from Google expired on June 1st, 2015.

You need to know how to manage files on a computer to understand the steps in this article. If you're not comfortable with unzipping, renaming, copying, and pasting files, please contact your local IT administrator or a "computer savvy" friend to help out.

SketchUp Pro 2013 Instructions

To get started, close SketchUp (if it's open) and click here to download a revised and compressed SketchUp.dat file. Make a note of where this file downloads to your computer. Most browsers use a Downloads folder by default.

If you use a Windows computer:

  1. Open a new Windows Explorer window.
  2. Go to the folder that contains the SketchUp.dat.zip file you just downloaded.
  3. Double-click to uncompress the ZIP file.
  4. Copy the uncompressed SketchUp.dat file. Be sure to refrain from copying anything else before completing this process. You'll be pasting the file in a few steps.
  5. Go to the folder C:\Program Files (x86)\SketchUp\SketchUp 2013\Support.
    Notes:
    • For 32-bit Windows operating systems, the first folder is Program Files, instead of Program Files (x86).
    • This article assumes that you installed SketchUp using the default settings. If you installed SketchUp into a different folder, you will need to locate that folder and get to the equivalent location.
  6. Right-click on the SketchUp.dat file and select Rename.
  7. Rename the file to SketchUp.old
  8. Paste the new SketchUp.dat file into the folder.

It's now safe to open SketchUp 2013 again.

If you use a Mac OS X computer:

  1. Open a new Finder window.
  2. Go to the folder that contains the SketchUp.dat.zip file you just downloaded.
  3. Double-click to uncompress the ZIP file.
  4. Copy the uncompressed SketchUp.dat file. Be sure to refrain from copying anything else before completing this process. You'll be pasting the file in a few steps.
  5. Go to the Applications/SketchUp 2013 folder.
  6. Right-click on the SketchUp application file and select Show Package Contents.
  7. Go to /Contents/Resources/Content.
  8. Click once on the SketchUp.dat file to select it.
  9. Press the return key on your keyboard. This will allow you to rename the file.
  10. Rename the file to SketchUp-old.dat
  11. Paste the new SketchUp.dat file into the folder.

It's now safe to open SketchUp 2013 again.

SketchUp Pro 8 Instructions

    Note: There are two Library folders on Mac OS X. One is under Macintosh HD and the other is under your user name. In this case, you want the Library folder under Macintosh HD .
  6. Click once on the SketchUp.dat file to select it.
  7. Press the return key on your keyboard. This will allow you to rename the file.
  8. Rename the file to SketchUp-old.dat
  9. Paste the new SketchUp.dat file into the folder.

It's now safe to open SketchUp 8 again.
