SketchUp Mobile Overview

NOTICE: SketchUp 2015 is here! When you look at this Knowledge Center article, be sure to pick "SketchUp 2015" from the red box above to see the 2015 version of that content. If there is no version picker, this content applies to all versions of SketchUp.

The SketchUp Mobile Viewer for iOS and Android is a great way to download and view Public or Private SketchUp models that have been uploaded to the 3D Warehouse. To get started, let's take a look at what you will see once the app is loaded on your Apple tablet:

The SketchUp Mobile Viewer starts with one model, but that's just the beginning. From here, you can search the 3D Warehouse for more models, or Sign In to your 3D Warehouse account to view your Private or Public models. You can also tap the Help button (which looks like a question mark) to get more information.

Searching for a Model

SketchUp Mobile Viewer Search
SketchUp Mobile Viewer - iOS

Just like searching the 3D Warehouse from SketchUp or from an Internet browser, you can search for Models or Collections. Tap the 3D Warehouse icon in the lower left corner to bring up the 3D Warehouse search screen. To search, tap the search box and type what you're looking for. For example, type [ car ], then click the Search button. Once you see the search results, you can tap on the image of a model to see more info about that model. Or you can tap the Open button in the bottom right corner of the thumbnail to view the model in 3D.

Viewing a Model

Once you have a model loaded in the viewer, you can navigate one of three ways:

  • Drag one finger to Orbit
  • Drag two fingers to Pan
  • Pinch two fingers to Zoom

The utility bar on the left side of the screen can come in handy. If you don't see the bar, tap the upward arrow in the lower left corner.

  • SketchUp Mobile Viewer Home Button Tap the Home button to get back to the SketchUp Mobile Viewer home screen.
  • SketchUp Mobile Viewer Info Button Tap the Info button to see more details about the model, such as the description, title, and author name.
  • SketchUp Mobile Viewer Cameras Button Tap the Cameras button to view the model in Standard Views (eg. Top, Bottom, Side) and any custom cameras that were added to the model using SketchUp.
  • SketchUp Mobile Viewer Zoom Extents Button Tap the Zoom Extents button to view all the geometry in the model. This feature is particularly useful when you get a bit lost while navigating the model and you need to reset the view.
  • SketchUp Mobile Viewer Minimize Nav Button Tap the Hide button to close the utility bar. If you need it back again, tap the upward arrow in the lower left corner.

Downloading a Model to your tablet

When you download a model from the 3D Warehouse to your tablet, this stores a copy of the model locally, which means that you don't have to be online to see the model. It also adds the model to your home screen so you can easily reference the model later. Start by viewing a model. See the sections above on Searching and Viewing models if you haven't read those yet. Once you're done viewing the model, simply tap the Home button. You will see this message:

Save Before Closing?
Don't Save | Save

Tap Save and the model will appear on your home screen.

You can also download the model by tapping on the image of the model on the Search results page. This will bring up the Details window (shown below). Tap the Download button in the lower left corner.

Deleting a Model from your tablet

If there are models on your tablet that you don't want to keep anymore, you can delete them by going to the SketchUp Mobile Viewer home screen. Tap the Info button on the model, then tap the Delete button which looks like a trash can. Remember that this only removes the model from the tablet. It does not remove the model from the 3D Warehouse.

Accessing your Models

If you've uploaded models to the 3D Warehouse, you probably want to see those models, too, right? Right. While you're looking at the home screen or the search results page, tap the Sign In link in the upper right corner. Enter your Google Account information and tap Sign In.They won't be downloaded automatically, however. Tap the Download button in the lower right corner of a model image to download the model to your device.

Note that the SketchUp Mobile Viewer can only access models that have been uploaded to the 3D Warehouse. Integration with other cloud services or opening files locally on your iPad isn't available at this time.
